Matthew's Focus on Technology Leads to New Job

Matthew left school in December 2012 having achieved an A/S level in Food Technology but disappointing GCSE grades.  With only one week of work experience, assisting a chef in the kitchen, there was not much he could include on his CV and when Matthew had no luck applying for employment he found himself with little to do and was occupying himself with online social networking and gaming.

Fortunately Matthew decided to start an Access to Apprenticeship programme with DMT, training in IT Software, Web & Telecoms Professional skills.  Matthew had a real passion for the subject and was “buddied up” with a more experienced Apprentice, which gradually increased his confidence, until he was assisting with calls to the ICT helpdesk.  Keen to learn and progress, Matthew was encouraged to add a unit of Business Administration or Customer Service NVQ level 2 to his Apprenticeship training in ICT to enhance his employability and complement his growing skills and knowledge.  He chose to take Business Administration.

Matthew was successful in gaining employment with Cornwall Community Action Network in November 2011 and flourished in the new working environment.  By the time Matthew completed his Key Skills qualifications in early January 2012 he had benefited from weekly workshops where he developed his jobsearch and interview skills.  This helped him to compose a much more interesting and impressive CV and his profile was uploaded by DMT’s Placement Agency to the DMT website.

Impressed by his CV, Andrew Davenport, Managing Director of Focus Technology, in Hayle, invited Matthew to interview for a post with him and commented that Matthew presented very well at interview and had obviously prepared thoroughly for it, unlike several other young hopefuls he had interviewed previously whose CVs he thought were rather disappointing.  Matthew and his new employer have explored possibilities for further training and have decided that Business Administration is their preferred route.

Matthew is “cock-a hoop” at successfully gaining employment at Focus Technology and delighted with the opportunity to continue training with DMT.  DMT is working closely with Andrew Davenport to ensure Focus Technology can benefit from the financial support provided by the new AGE Apprenticeship grant which will support Matthew’s further skills development through this new Apprenticeship opportunity.
