DMT's Apprenticeship Offer

An Apprenticeship is a work-based training programme that gives individuals the chance to get paid while they build their skills and get qualified.

Apprenticeships offer employers a cost effective way to improve the skills base of their business and DMT's Apprenticeship programmes can help with the costs of recruiting and training staff.

Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, achieving learning aims and earning money all at the same time. They must be employed under a contract of employment and working at least 30 hours per week (although exceptions may be made, for example for people with caring responsibilities), and they must be paid at least minimum wage, although many employers choose to offer higher wages.

Apprenticeships are available at Intermediate and Advanced Level (Level 2 and Level 3) and provide a basis for progression to higher levels, like a Higher (Level 4) Apprenticeship if available or a Foundation Degree.

Each Apprenticeship is made up of a number of different qualifications and areas of learning:

  • a competence qualification, such as an NVQ Diploma;
  • a knowledge qualification, like a Diploma;

(or sometimes one qualification will cover both the competence and the knowledge aspects);

  • key skills or functional skills;
  • employment rights and responsibilities (ERR);
  • personal learning and thinking skills (PLTS);

so successful Apprentices gain a wide range of skills and knowledge and a number of nationally recognised qualifications as well as their Apprenticeship certificate.

Apprentices are entitled to, and must complete, a minimum number of hours of both on-the-job and off-the-job training to achieve their Apprenticeship.

DMT offers Intermediate and Advanced level Apprenticeships in:

  • Construction trades - Brick/Blocklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, General Construction, Maintenance Operations, Glass and Glazing;

DMT specialises in helping people get started on Apprenticeships, even if they don't have the academic qualifications and grades, or can't meet the entry requirements, that some colleges and providers demand. We are able to offer a range of help and support and preparatory training to help you get started on Apprenticeship training and find work.

We are also unique in offering off-the-job training in our multi-skill work based training centre, where training is delivered in a working environment that offers an alternative to school or college for those who don't feel the more traditional, academic approach suits them.
